l Comprehensive learning environment
Interdisciplinary knowledge and skills seems to be essential currency, therefore, comprehensive course is adopted to fit this need in many schools. A Comprehensive learning environment based on computer and network can help students discover the interdisciplinary relations; acquire authentic experience and the methodological knowledge that needed in information society.
l Family related learning environment
In modern China, the family also has much change. Family has become small and more affection-oriented unit which put more gravity on their only child; the parents have better literacy that make parent-child culture exchange possible; electronic sets are gradually pervasive. Therefore, child can engage in active learning and practicing the textbook knowledge with parent’s participation. In addition, the parents also can learn from their children.
3.What this means for a teacher
In the learning environment, the teacher has become more of a coach on side rather than the main source for delivering information; become creative manager of learning experience rather than merely dispense of material. Teacher meet the challenges of how to integrate the computer and Internet into students’ learning activity, how to combine the curriculum and technologies, how to transform theory knowledge into the daily life, how to promote collaboration, etc. So, teacher’s role and instructional skills should be redefined, training is needed.
4.How does teacher education need to change to meet with the needs of learning environment?
Traditional teacher education focuses on teaching skills rather than learning skills. To truly embrace the concept of learning environment, previous content of teacher education, including their purpose must be examined and changed. The main content follows:
1. Without a doubt, the field of computer science and information technology has a special status in the teacher education currently. But the emphasis of training should be put on as the learning tools rather than teaching tool.
2. Information acquiring skills should be training, not only the use of web-browser or search engine, but also the sensitivity, analysis and judge of information.
3. Communicating with the students and their parents by Internet should be trained, along with group and family counseling theories and techniques.
4. Help the teachers to use the computer or Internet for themselves in their work can do much help to improve their ability in organizing the learning environment for students.
5. Developing the ability to understand student’s perspective, to put teacher self in the shoes of student, is the necessary task in the preparation for teachers. Role-play is useful technique.
6. Training in inquiry way also helps teachers learn to look at the world from multiple perspectives, which can avoid a “bias” which limits their understanding of those whom they teach.
7. To arrange the homework for students and their parents to work together is the promise instructional activity. Training should contain such skills.
We do know that the role of teachers should change in the information society. We also know the teachers should develop new skills to organize learning environments and activities to help student experience more valuable learning. Our best hope is that teacher-education also should make change in the information society where life-long learning is needed.
